The rise of gray divorce in the United States

While not everyone will experience the end of a marriage, those who do often find that it is one of the most challenging experiences in life. These days, the stigmas surrounding divorce are gradually diminishing and the overall divorce rate in the United States is declining. However, for one demographic, the divorce rate has skyrocketed over the last 20 years. In what has become known as "gray divorce," more and more Arizona couples over 50 years of age are calling it quits.

Gray divorce has been on the rise for a number of reasons. The primary factors contributing to any divorce usually revolve around financial matters. However, in gray divorce, a lot of couples say they opted to end their marriage because they grew apart over the years and the spark just isn't there anymore. Early in their marriages, most spouses were busy starting families and raising kids. When the kids are grown and move out, couples are left with an empty nest and often find that their spouse is a different person than when they were first married.

Also, life expectancy is much higher and life spans are increasing. Those who are older than 50 find that they still have time to find what makes them happy instead of sticking with a stagnant marriage. Since the stigmas surrounding divorce are vanishing, so older individuals are choosing to end marriages and start over.

For most older couples, the children are adults and are out on their own, but gray divorce can still affect adult children. In some instances, children may be caught in the middle and forced to take sides, which is unpleasant. Late-life divorce can definitely be a good thing, though. This can be a time for rediscovery and renewal. Those in Arizona who have questions regarding any aspect of divorce could gain clarity and understanding by discussing the matter with an experienced attorney.
